Who We Are

Firstly, Happy Talk therapists are a friendly, professional, Bristol-based team. We help children to improve their communication skills. Our therapists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and comply with their standards of practice.

Kirsty Henderson

Kirsty has a BSc Hons in Speech and Language Therapy from the University College of St Mark and St John. Following this foundation training, she built NHS experience as a children’s Speech and Language Therapist.

Motivated to offer excellent, independent speech and language therapy for children, Kirsty set up Happy Talk in Bristol in 2014.

Kirsty works with children from age one through to secondary school age. Besides that, she will travel to you: Kirsty works in homes, schools, nurseries and children’s centres.

Communication challenges

Kirsty helps children with a wide range of speech, language and communication challenges. These difficulties include speech sound problems, language delay, stammering, specific language impairment and autism.

Preschool children

Kirsty has extensive experience of working with pre-school children.

School children

Kirsty has also worked widely in schools, assessing children, delivering therapy and training staff. She runs sessions on social skills, understanding and using language and developing speech sounds.

Bilingual families

Kirsty has worked with many bilingual families. She has completed training in supporting bilingual children with communication difficulties. She has worked with families from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.

CPD training

Kirsty has completed CPD training in:

  • Working with children with speech difficulties
  • Makaton sign language to level 4
  • Working with children who stammer
  • Gina Davies’ Attention Autism to stage 4 (the highest level). This is also known as ‘bucket therapy’
  • Lego therapy
  • Social Use of Language Programme
  • Hearing impairment
  • Cleft palate
  • Use of apps in speech and language therapy
  • Pathological Demand Avoidance
  • Working with bilingual children

Kirsty regularly attends Clinical Excellence Network meetings on autism, speech and early years working.

Registrations and clearances

Finally, Kirsty is a registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). She has enhanced DBS clearance for working with children. This clearance is continuously updated through the DBS update service. Kirsty is a registered Data Controller with the Information Commissioner’s Office. She is trained to keep personal data safe and private.
